The Physics

A tilted rod moves your antenna away from the mark.

When a GPS pole tilts, the antenna at the top travels in an arc away from directly above your ground point. That horizontal displacement goes directly into your coordinate — and there is no GPS solution that can correct for it.

The formula is simple. At just 1° of tilt, that is 34.9mm (0.115 ft) of position error. The critical question is whether your vial tells you when you are off — and by how much.

Most GPS survey poles ship with 20 or 40-minute vials. These vials are far less sensitive than the 8-minute vials used in precision instruments — meaning they can hide significant tilt that looks centered to the naked eye.

Horizontal error formula

H = 2 × sin(θ)

H = horizontal position error (meters) 2 = GPS pole length (meters) θ = tilt angle from true vertical

Vertical error formula

V = 2 × (1 − cos(θ))

Vertical error is very small compared to horizontal — a 1° tilt causes only 0.3mm of vertical error vs 34.9mm horizontal.

The position error is identical regardless of vial type. The difference is whether the surveyor can see it. A 40-minute vial at 2° of tilt looks almost normal.

Key takeaway: All three vials show the same tilt — the horizontal error is identical. The difference is whether the surveyor can see the problem. A 40-minute vial at 2° of tilt still looks close to centered, while the surveyor is collecting shots with nearly 0.23 ft of horizontal error built in.

Exits center ring at 0.67° — 5× more hidden error than an 8-minute vial. The most common vial type. At 2° of tilt the bubble still looks nearly centered.

Most GPS survey poles ship with 20 or 40-minute vials. These vials can accumulate significant horizontal position error while appearing perfectly level to the surveyor.
